Everything is intentional. Known as the “Children’s House,” the Primary classroom and garden are meticulously arranged to be accessible to children right at their level. This harnesses children’s innate desire for independence.

In the Children’s House, Primary children can do much for themselves. From the child-size wheelbarrows to the working children’s kitchen, they learn that they are capable, which builds their confidence every day.

Primary children learn to be responsible when they hang up their coats, wash their dishes after snack, put away books and learning materials after using them, and sweep up the cuttings of paper left on the table after projects. The results: strong skills for independence, the ability to work responsibly in community, and enduring satisfaction and self-confidence.

Choice within limits is foundational to all Montessori learning.

We know children are born curious, capable, and driven to learn. By honoring their interests and empowering them with age-appropriate levels of independence, we help ensure that their passion for learning remains bright.

Your child’s teacher observes carefully their individual interests and provides sequenced lessons designed to strategically develop their skills and knowledge. After receiving lessons, children practice these until they reach the satisfaction of understanding. They are then shown additional mini-lessons that inspire further refinement and practice.

Through this follow-up work, children deepen their comprehension of the concept, invoking within them the satisfying feeling of mastery.

The Primary Garden serves as a dynamic extension of the classroom, offering children hands-on, immersive experiences in nature. Students learn about the intricate parts of flowers while tending to vibrant blooms like California poppies, pansies, and snapdragons.

Daily routines such as weeding, flower arranging, and harvesting tall celery foster a sense of responsibility and connection to the natural world. Bug hunting becomes an exciting exploration, with children discovering beetles, creating temporary habitats for observation, and understanding the importance of returning creatures to their environment.

By planting beans, corn, and tomatoes, children actively engage in the cycles of growth, experiencing firsthand the patience and care required to cultivate and harvest. This holistic, hands-on learning nurtures curiosity, respect for nature, and a lifelong love of learning.

Movement is integral to the development of confidence, coordination, and community in the Primary program. Children work together on cooperative games and physical challenges, learning vital skills such as taking turns, leading, and graciously handling both victories and defeats.

Activities like jumping rope, soccer, relays, and mastering the monkey bars help students refine their coordination, balance, and endurance, while also fostering resilience and a strong sense of empathy.
