Thursday Bulletin | May 13, 2021 Message from Head of School Dear FIRSTNAME,
I encourage you to read a recent article titled, "Teenagers Are Struggling, and It's Not Just Lockdown." Given that children growing up in high-achieving communities suffer from clinical depression and anxiety at three to seven times higher rates than national norms for children their age, there is much to consider here for all parents, even of young children. One quote that stuck out particularly to me is, "According to research... the strongest predictor of depression among these students was perceived parental criticism and unreachable standards." Important food for thought as we raise and educate our children.
In Partnership,

On Tuesday last week, students in the Great White Egret Upper Elementary classroom experienced their first Going Out Day in over a year! The children are building a new seating area for the garden and have spent the past few weeks designing and planning this project. After solidifying their shopping list and budget, the children were finally ready to head to Golden State Lumber in San Rafael to purchase the necessary lumber. Class parent Jeff Gossett gave them a tour of the lumber yard and taught them how to check the boards, choosing the best ones for their project. The children handled the financial transaction as well, managing all of the money themselves. Development

Crew Connection We couldn't do what we do without each amazing member of our team. This space is dedicated to highlighting a member (or two!) of our Crew. Everyone on our team will be featured throughout the year, and our hope is that we all feel connected with one another even though we are unable to all connect in person. Shellie Occhipinti, Assistant in the Great Blue Heron Classroom (School Biography here) Shellie and her grandchildren enjoying Stinson Beach What would you like people to know about you and the work you do at MMS?
Working with the transportation team was my first introduction to the world of MMS. On my many adventures driving students around Marin and the greater Bay Area, I enjoyed observing experiential learning in action. Looking back at the past two years here I am amazed at the many hats I've worn, from driver, junior high substitute, chasing turkeys and planting corn with Kate, working summer camp, and now primary support staff. I am very much looking forward to wearing my garden hat next year.
What was your first job? Mel's drive-in, wearing rollerskates and delivering burgers and fries. Who would you want to play you in a movie of your life and why?
Oh, Goldie Hawn for sure! I love her sparkle and effervescence. She also conveys my love of life and light-heartedness. She is also one strong and determined woman whom I very much admire.
What are you looking forward to the most during the 2021-2022 school year?
I feel blessed that I am going to be the Garden Teacher for the primary children next year. I look forward to sharing the experience with the children as we cultivate and nurture our garden and plan to bring elements of music, art, creativity, and sensory exploration to the program.
