Primary 2 - 6 years old*

It is in the primary class that the young child is introduced
to all the aspects of the world.
They explore history, geography, and biology,
along with art and music, both of which are
    expressions of the human soul.
They do this when they work with activities of
Practical Life, Sensorial, Mathematics, and Language.
The children are free to follow their own
interests.  Through working with the materials,
    the children develop self-confidence, initiative,
    and concentration.

Primary children join a larger community of multi-age children.

This multi-age grouping is an essential
component of Montessori education.

Five and six year olds are the
classroom leaders and act as role models.
Younger children are interested in learning
and emulating the older children.

Older children reinforce what they have
learned by giving lessons to younger
children.  The result is a deep sense of
caring and respect for each other.

The Primary Community meets five days a week, Monday through Friday.
Children may attend from 8:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. (half-day) or 8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. (full-day).
All children in their last primary level year must enroll in the full-day session.

There is one AMI Montessori trained Directress and one assistant for each primary community.

* Ages are approximate as placement depends on each child’s abilities and emotional growth.

Toddler Level 18 months - 2 years old*

Children in the toddler community explore and experiment in an environment carefully prepared to
meet each child's individual needs
. This nurturing environment has toddler-sized furniture and beautiful,
clean, safe, and inviting materials. Toddlers are gently guided and supported in a manner that enhances their
innate sense of independence, order, and love of learning. Trust in self and in others, building of self-
esteem, doing for one's self and a consciousness of culture all develop through real, purposeful activities in
a loving, supportive community.

Toddlers are given time and opportunity to
explore language, music, movement, art,
practical life activities, and fine and
gross motor activities that meet their
individual developmental
needs. They practice skills such as
buttoning, tying and zipping,
preparing meals, caring for themselves
(including toileting)
and their environment.

The Toddler Community meets four days a week, Monday through Thursday,
from 8:30 am - 11:30 am (half-day) or 8:30 am - 2:45 pm (full-day).

There is one AMI Montessori trained Directress and one assistant.

* Ages are approximate as placement depends on each child’s abilities and emotional growth.

Marin Montessori School
- Education for Life -

An Association Montessori Internationale School
Our Program

Reaching fullest potential comes from our carefully orchestrated Montessori program. As children
progress through our program’s four levels, Toddler, Primary, Elementary, and Junior High School,
their growth is exponential. Each year concretely, logically, and consistently builds on lessons learned in
previous years. Your child receives the full benefit of a Montessori education by completing all levels of
our program.

Junior High School 12 - 15 years old
Marin Montessori School is pleased to offer a program for 12-15 year olds.
Consistent with Maria Montessori’s observations about the first half of the third plane of human
development—early adolescence—our environmentally based program provides a combination of rigorous
intellectual development and hands-on learning within the context of a land-based school site.
 Marin
Montessori young adults apply their academic skills to creating an ecologically sound and sustainable
agricultural learning  environment where they can explore human interactions and interdependence
with nature.

The curriculum includes:
•        Creative Expression through Arts and Music
•        Humanities through the study of human progress, history and building up of civilization and literature
•        Integrated Sciences through the study of earth and living things
•        Mathematics (Pre Algebra and Algebra)
•        Healthy Living
•        Technology
•        Language A and Language B (First and Second Languages)

Students balance their days with a blend of theoretical and practical work.  Group projects provide
relevance and validation for the individual’s growing cognitive skills.  Students work together through an
anthropological approach to history and science as they explore human survival on the land, the rise of
agricultural economies around the world and the results of the advent of technology.  Habitat restoration,
organic farming, community-building, micro-economics and ecologically responsible resource development
are the project themes of the adolescent curriculum.

Combined with a curriculum reflecting the standards of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years
Program, MMS students grow in independence and prepare themselves for high school and for life as
global citizens.

Elementary 6 – 12 years old
It is at the elementary level that the children become fascinated with the “how” and “why” of everything.
Assisted by their imaginations and reasons, elementary children at Marin Montessori School
become explorers, not just of the world, but also of the entire universe.

    Marin Montessori School's exciting and
    innovative approach to intellectual development
complements the elementary child’s quest for
knowledge.  Beginning with a warm and
    supportive academic atmosphere, MMS
emphasizes “high order” skills -- the ability to
research information, interpret it, connect it to
information already obtained, and analyze its
    importance. Collaborative projects are common
as each member contributes within his/her
    capabilities.  Marin Montessori School children
challenge themselves and set high expectations
for their quality of thought, work, and mastery of
    content and skills.

Marin Montessori School's unique approach to personal and social development complements the
elementary child’s quest to become an independent, productive, and compassionate person
. In collaboration
with each child, the teacher gently guides him/her to become self-directed in his/her studies, to employ
conflict management techniques in solving social issues, and to evaluate his/her quality and efficiency of
work.  This respectful approach enables the child to take full responsibility for personal successes.

The elementary curriculum includes: Mathematics, Geometry, Algebra, Language, Reading, Writing,
Grammar, Literature, History, Physical Geography, Cultural Geography, Economic Geography, Zoology,
Botany, Anatomy, Ecology, Chemistry, Geology, Mineralogy, Meteorology, Astronomy, Elementary
Physics, Drama, Music, Art, Spanish (upper elementary), and Physical Education.

The elementary community attends five days a week, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
The elementary level is broken into two age groups:
6 - 9 year olds (lower elementary)
9 - 12 year olds (upper elementary).

There is one AMI Montessori trained Teacher and one assistant per classroom.
